Public Health England are advising pregnant women to consider postponing any un-essential trips to Florida. This is following four cases of the Zira virus being transmitted by local mosquitos.

Why have they said this?

The virus itself isn’t life threatening and will only cause a mild illness in most people. However, the virus has been linked to brain malfunctions and other birth defects in newborn children.

Can I get vaccinated against it?

Sadly not. As of 2016 there are no vaccinations or medications that can prevent catching the virus.

What are they symptoms of Zika virus?

in most cases there aren’t any. However, those who do show symptoms report that they are mild and include :

  • fever
  • red eyes
  • joint pain
  • headache
  • rash

Generally, for those who do show symptoms they last for less than 7 days.

How can I prevent catching the Zika virus?

As there are no vaccinations available, the recommendations are to use insect repellent, cover as much of your body as possible and use mosquito nets when sleeping.
